The vultures are circling again at Anfield, and this time they've got a name in mind for the hot seat.
Danny Murphy has delivered a stark warning to Arne Slot whilst simultaneously throwing his weight behind a potential dream replacement. The former Red believes the current manager's position remains precarious heading into what promises to be another crucial summer.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy didn't mince his words about Slot's immediate future. The pressure cooker that is Anfield management means there's precious little room for error when the new campaign kicks off.
"If Slot doesn't start well, it [pressure] is going to start again," Murphy explained. "But if he starts badly and they're sitting in fifth, sixth after eight games, it's done."
It's brutal but honest assessment from someone who knows the demands of playing for this club. The reality is that Liverpool's recent campaign left plenty to be desired, and patience among supporters will be thinner than ever come August.
The interesting twist comes in Murphy's suggestion for who should replace Slot if things go south. When pressed about potential candidates, including the much-discussed Xabi Alonso who's heading to Chelsea, Murphy had a different name entirely.
"I would try and break the bank and do anything I can to get Luis Enrique," he declared. The Paris Saint-Germain boss clearly fits Murphy's vision of what Liverpool need.
His reasoning is compelling too. "Well, if Enrique wins the Champions League again, what more can he do? He must be bored there, playing in a Mickey Mouse league where he wins every week. All he's looking forward to is the Champions League. He must want more challenge, surely?"
It's a fair point about the PSG manager's situation. Domestic dominance in France hardly stretches a coach of Enrique's calibre, and the allure of the Premier League's intensity might prove irresistible.
Meanwhile, the summer rebuild continues to gather pace with question marks hanging over key personnel. The departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have already reshaped the squad significantly, and now Alisson Becker finds himself linked with a move to Juventus.
However, there's been a development on that front. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano suggests the Brazilian goalkeeper might be staying put after all. The Reds have reportedly informed the 33-year-old that they want him to remain for next season.
The keeper's situation epitomises the delicate balancing act facing the club. With his deal running out next season, Liverpool need to convince their established stars that the project remains worth their commitment. Alisson's reluctance to damage his relationship with the club could prove crucial in keeping him on Merseyside for what would be his ninth year.
Murphy also touched on an interesting dynamic regarding transfer decisions, suggesting Slot doesn't have complete control over recruitment. "I don't think he's got a big say in the players [recruitment], by the way. But I think he's going to have some sort of say in the players that come in."
It's a reminder that modern football management extends far beyond the touchline. The collaborative approach to squad building means success or failure rarely falls on one person's shoulders alone.
The coming months will define whether Slot gets the chance to prove his worth or whether Liverpool start eyeing up that Luis Enrique phone number. Either way, there's no hiding from the fact that Anfield demands nothing less than excellence.
With Champions League qualification secured despite a disappointing campaign, the stage is set for what promises to be a pivotal summer. The question now is whether Slot can orchestrate the kind of start that silences the doubters for good.
